Kick Off the Summer with Concerts in the Park

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. invites the public to attend the 2012 Essex County Free SummerMusic Concert Series. The free Concert Series brings a diverse group of musicians and entertainers to perform at locations throughout the historic Essex County Park System and provides residents with an evening leisure activity to enjoy the parks. This year’s series features two concert and fireworks spectaculars, the South Orange International Blues Festival and Brookdale Park concerts being returned to Friday nights.

The SummerMusic Concert Series is being sponsored by Filippo Berio Olive Oil, Rose Squared Productions, TD Bank and the Branch Brook Park Alliance. The series is also made possible, in part, by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Over the course of the summer, there are 26 different performances, featuring some of the best local and international acts in jazz, rock and roll, big band, reggae and more. The 2012 SummerMusic Concert Series begins Saturday, June 16 with a Gospel Festival in Essex County Monte Irvin Orange Park and concludes Sunday, September 9 with Mike Griot Presents the South Orange International Blues Festival in Essex County South Mountain Reservation.

There will be two Concert and Fireworks Extravaganzas this summer; the first features the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra on Friday, June 29 in Essex County Branch Brook Park in Newark and second features The Duprees and Glenn Miller Orchestra on Monday, July 2 in Essex County Brookdale Park in Bloomfield/Montclair. 1. I never understood the attraction of a “tribute” band. That is a band who pretends to be some famous act and copies them as much as possible. Did people going to Beatlemania really think they were seeing the Beatles? Is the B-Street Band gonna be just like going to a Springsteen show, only, you know, with the magic that separates Mr. Springsteen and his band from another group of 60+ year olds playing music? What’s next? A gallery exhibit of copies of great master paintings? Hey! Just like seeing the Mona Lisa, but without having to deal with all those French people. I used to go to the Brookdale shows all the time. I’d rather see musicians playing their own spin on standards (or their own standards)in the case of the has-been bands that get booked…than seeing a group of guys pretending to be Journey. That’s just me. Your mileage, as they say, may vary.
