Giddy, wide-eyed and totally psyched. That’s how I’d describe my 6-year-old daughters when they first saw the cute new salon in Montclair called Uptowne Girl. The black-and-white striped space is especially designed for little girls, tweens and teens. Moms can also get their hair done beside their daughters, which was happening when we were there last week. Manicures and pedicures are available in the back of the chic, open space where Aunt Jean’s toy store used to be.
Even my 4-year-old boy was excited because this is such a kid-friendly place, and the staff was so enthusiastic. (Older boys would grimace, but my little man still plays Lalaloopsy with his sisters. See him getting a mohawk at left.)
The idea was to “create a mommy and me spa,” manager Erica Russo said. She runs Uptowne Girl Salon with her sister Kerry Coiro (above), a hair stylist, and her mom Patricia Keenan, also a stylist. They love working together as a family, and they wanted to create a place where moms and daughters could bond. They opened their dream business in May. “We want everyone to feel welcome and taken care of,” Russo said.
They offer haircuts, blowouts, up-dos, colored extensions, manicures, pedicures, facials and makeup application. The only thing they don’t do is chemicals. “We are a full service, non-chemical salon,” Russo explained. “All of our kids products are organic, and there’s no formaldehyde in the nail polish.”
They also offer popular spa parties, mainly for birthdays. “We’ve been open a month and booked five already.” Russo can close the salon on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 4 to 6 p.m. for bashes. Groups of girls can get dolled up while they celebrate. The salon provides several fun services plus lemonade and cupcakes.
Melanie Guzman from Newark was there with her 15-year-old daughter when we stopped by. She was happy with her haircut and blowout. She added, “I love this concept. My daughter is in heaven.”
