Garden State Equality‘s 2012 Equality Walk is on Saturday, June 23 at 4:00 p.m. starting at Erie Park in Montclair. Proceeds from the event will help fund the organization’s marriage equality campaign. Here are more details from the GSE website:
Whether you walk or form a team of friends to join you on the Equality Walk, you will be significantly advancing Garden State Equality’s fight to win marriage equality in New Jersey by an override of Governor Christie’s veto. We passed the marriage equality through both houses of the legislature, as you know, and are stunningly close to achieving an override. Our dream is in our grasp. If you can’t physically be at the Equality Walk, we invite you to be a Virtual Walker. You can still register and collect donations online. On the day of the Equality Walk, wear a Garden State Equality shirt or pin wherever you are.
The proceeds from last year’s Equality Walk raised the money we needed to pass the bill earlier this year. We could not have done so without the success of last year’s Equality Walk. Similarly, we cannot override Governor Christie’s veto – as close as we are – without a successful Equality Walk this year. Each year, the Equality Walk is the primary source of Garden State Equality’s net revenue. Now more than ever, we need the resources to counter our opponents’ expected invasion of New Jersey when the override comes up for a vote.
You can register for the 2012 Equality Walk now at www.GardenStateEquality.org. Walkers can walk individually or with a team (you can join a team online). A team can be any number of walkers, though GSE recommends a minimum of six. There is no required minimum amount of money to raise. If you aren’t able to walk, you can donate online without walking or sponsor another walker.
Every walker who raises $250 will receive a Garden State Equality WE SHALL OVERRIDE t-shirt, and the top three individuals who raise $2,000 or more will each receive two free tickets to DECADES, Garden State Equality’s high concept dinner-dance this fall featuring live tributes to the music of the 1970s, 80s and 90s.
The walk ends at Egan’s Pub, where the first round of appetizers for all walkers is on GSE. Plus, join in for the annual Pub Quiz, where you can face off against local officials.
