What’s for Dinner?: Natural Pink Lemonade—a Fun Recipe for Kids to Make


I love it when a kids’ craft project has an edible outcome instead of ending up in the trash.

So in the spirit of Holly Korus, here’s a refreshing, natural pink lemonade recipe that also doubles as an engaging activity for the little ones.

My kids are obsessed with lemonade, and being girly-girls they are even more obsessed with anything pink, so as far as treats for five-year olds go, pink lemonade could not be any cooler. Both literally and figuratively.

This lemonade recipe has no artificial colors or sweeteners and is packed with Vitamin C. I was a bit mean with the sugar so the taste was a little on the tart side. This elicited a few turned-up noses from some of my girls’ friends, so taste and adjust accordingly. You could also use agave or stevia for a healthier alternative to sugar.

Natural Pink Lemonade

  • Juice of 6-7 lemons, or even a few limes (about 1 ½ cups juice)
  • ½ – 1 cup of sugar
  • 6 cups of water
  • Handful of strawberries
  • Ice

Get the kids to work juicing—in my experience, the longer you can make this stage last the better! To make your (I mean their) labor easier, FIRMLY roll the lemons between your hand and counter top before cutting in half and juicing. It’s useful to have spare lemons on hand as spills are inevitable. Another tip is to take the lemons out of the refrigerator ahead of time as you will get more juice out of them if they are at room temperature.

Puree the strawberries in a blender, if the seeds are still visible you can sieve them to get rid of them.

Mix the lemon juice, water, sugar and strawberry puree in a large pitcher, stir well, refrigerate and serve with plenty of ice. Add a sprig of mint to look even more fancy.
