One Savvy Design in Montclair: The Hunt is On

Jimmy Choo shoes

It is usually said that men are the hunters and women are gatherers. Those who believe this theory have never been in a store full of designer women’s clothing marked way, way down. My theory is the first fur coat was worn for fashion rather than warmth. Some fashion savvy cave-woman saw an animal frolicking about and thought , “How beautiful—that  would look on me.” In a flash, with razor like skills, she beaned the unassuming critter with a rock. The next day she was the talk of the cave village with her new fur frock. Soon after she acquired loads of trapping equipment ( oh course she hid the receipt from her husband) and employed men to trap and skin the furs for her. This is how men really got the title of “hunters.”True story.

While taking pictures and browsing at One Savvy Design, a consignment boutique in Montclair, a lovely woman walked in the door, quickly scanned the front room and went in for her kill like a hawk. The kill was quick and clean. The prey was a Jimmy Choo bag.

Arline the owner of One Savvy Design  sets the tone in her store with her wonderful energy and fantastic taste. Forget snobby, the vibe is fun-minded women looking for gorgeous bargains, while chatting like we all have known each other for years. Some of us looking for labels, others for fabulous style and home furnishings. All that is missing is a wine bar.

So let’s talk labels. I asked Arline how she would describe her store:

We are two stores in one. Both a women’s designer consignment boutique and a furniture store. We have a great assortment of women’s apparel: dresses, shirts, blouses, sweaters, jackets, pants, skirts, shoes and handbags. From Calvin Klein to Dolce & Gabbana, Diane Von Furstenberg, Jean Paul Gaultier, Escada, Badgley Mischka, Manolo Blahnik, Theory, Vince, Prada, Giorgio Armani, Velvet, Cole Hann, BCBG, boutique brands and more.

We have jeans from True Religion, Joes, Sevens and Citizens of Humanity. The store has an array of fun costume jewelry, as well as featuring a local designer who hand weaves the necklaces and bracelets with glass beads, precious stones and Swarovski crystals as well as  hand-made earrings from a local artist. The store carries pieces from Tiffany and David Yurman for half the price they would sell for in the store!  Sunglasses from Ray Ban, Gucci, Marc Jacobs  Prada and more!

Our furniture is focused on shabby chic with antique/vintage dressers, chandeliers and mirrors. (not on consignment). Delivery is available in and out of town!”

I know that Jean Paul Gaultier dress with the underwater pattern and skull will haunt me if I don’t go back in a try it on.

I always thought summer hours meant a store is open later? Too bad this store doesn’t cater to people who have a 9-5 job

Love the “hunter-gatherer” metaphor. From the saber-toothed tiger to “Jimmy Choo” — humanity has made an interesting journey. Ancient hunters prayed to the spirits of the hunt. Do we now pray to “Manolo Blahnik”?

Anyway good luck to the new store.
