UPDATED: Hurricane Sandy: To Do List For Power-Challenged

Line at Montclair Library before opening at 10 am

Updated at 11:45 p.m. There is lots of cars on road and it’s very congested—try to walk to destination if possible.

No power — and no quick relief in sight. Good news is — we’re hearing lots of great families helping other families. The Montclair Y is open today (offering showers, as well as free wi-fi and charging) and the Salvation Army — in addition to Montclair council chambers — is open as a charging station. They also have seen an increase in guests for breakfast and lunch. Donations are welcome. Bangz Salon and Spa told Baristanet  they are opening up their showers in their  spa to anyone who needs them. They will be open are  until 8PM.  Please  bring your own towels and toiletries. Also,  Bangz is offering we are offering 50% off any blowouts today. SwapXXchange is also open today and open to anyone who need to charge up.
If you’ve got a business willing to help, leave in comments. We are also updating on Facebook and Twitter.

  1. I like life in the 19th century. Last night I went to sleep at 10:45 and slept until almost 8 o’clock. It was so quiet. Had the iPhone on airplane mode. Only needed to take Ambien once or twice (I can’t remember).

  2. The people of St. James’ Episcopal Church – 581 Valley Road at the corner of Bellevue Avenue – invite their Montclair neighbors to drop into the groundfloor kitchen, library and parish hall for electricity, heat and Internet on Wednesday. Open hours on Thursday and Friday will depend on the opening of the St. James Preschool.

  3. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 73 South Fullerton will be open from 9am to 9pm for heat, wi-fi, recharging and free coffee until the power is restored.
Movies and activities for children will be available for children with their parents.
