Old Man Whipple Ain't Afraid of No Hurricane

Hurricane Sandy has already ruined Dr. Wayne Gangi’s annual Halloween creepy decorated corner on Grove Street in Clifton, but Old Man Whipple of Montclair, isn’t giving up yet.

Old Man Whipple’s House is a Montclair Halloween tradition. The house is scary, but Old Man Whipple has a heart. He collects donations at his annual Haunted Walk for good causes. This year, he has teamed up with Montclair High’s CGI club to benefit Toni’s Kitchen.

When I first heard of Old Man Whipple’s House, I imagined some creepy old, hunchbacked man living in a decrepit house. Today, Barista Kids will reveal what Old Man Whipple really looks like. Are you ready for the big reveal?

The truth is, Old Man Whipple is just a Montclair dad of three— (Henry, a junior at MHS, and twins Claire and Eliza, 6th graders at Glenfield and Renaissance Middle Schools—who just truly loves Halloween. John Whipple is an attorney, trumpet player and lover of the arts— and not old at all.

But he offers the area a fun Halloween experience. John says that this year, the Haunted Walk will be bigger and better than ever. The entire property will be filled with spooky fun and there will be a new feature called “The Dropper.” I couldn’t get Whipple to explain, so I’m thinking The Dropper will be pretty scary and/or awesome, depending on who the person is.

We spoke to John this morning and asked if Hurricane Sandy has canceled his Haunted Walk:

We’re a go both Wed. And Fri. if need be. We’re ready even if we lose power with a generator staged. We’ve secured most things and based on last year’s quick recovery after the snowstorm are confident that we can deliver a fun night regardless for those in a position to enjoy it.

Here’s hoping that by Wednesday, we can all enjoy some Halloween fun.

Thank you Old Man Whipple. If we lose power we are there and even if we don’t lose power.

Hey maybe he could get this going tomorrow since there will be no school!
