Things Parents Say When You Ask Why They Don't Let Their Kids Walk or Bike to School

Will your children be walking or biking to school tomorrow for International Walk to School Day? If your answer is no, why not? Is is one of the reasons given in this video developed by NJ Safe Routes? (Yes, that is Bike&Walk Montclair‘s own Laura Torchio in the video!)

I’ll be honest, because my girls’ schools are too far away for us to walk, I haven’t participated before. This year we will, even if it only means driving to the  meeting place our schools have designated and walking a few blocks together in solidarity.

I have no excuse not to do that.

I wish my kids could bike to school. It is about 1 mile away, but they would either have to ride on the Upper Mountain Autobahn or along the Valley Road Freeway.

I have been laughing since I watched this video. Our walk/ bike group even started writing a song about the excuses people give.

My kids take buses. I imagine that if we – along with a significant portion of the other busing families – did this, then there might be a traffic and parking problem.

    Actually agideon,

I’ve been told that they are encouraging bussers to bus. They would rather see the buses full than have a bunch of cars at drop off.

My girls don’t take the bus, even though we’re too far to walk.
