After 17 years of operating in Upper Montclair, The Banyan Tree is closing its doors.

Kate Heston, co-owner of the popular home furnishings store along with Valerie Fischer, told Baristanet they’re ready to move on. “We’ve had a great run here, but we’re looking forward to writing the next chapter of our lives,” said Heston. “It’s bittersweet. We’ve loved this place as much as everyone else, but it’s just a matter of leaving when it’s time.”

Heston says she has been hired by Bloomingdales into their management training program, and Valerie is considering “a tremendous amount of options.”

A store wide sale is on now, says Heston, with discounts beginning at 25% off. She expects they’ll leave the space around the beginning of March.

  1. I went on Saturday but am sad to report there were no “Miss Nicky’s Toffees” to be found ~ but there were all manner of other things with so much more waiting to find a new home.

  2. As much as I loved the inventory at Banyan Tree, I certainly found the workers/owners, to be extremely rude and very condescending anytime I was in there. Won’t miss them one bit!

  3. The couple of times I visited the store to browse, I found the owners to be friendly and charming. Good luck to them!

  4. WOW I will miss Banyan Tree- it is the store I always go to to buy gifts for people who are hard to shop for… also, there is something amazing there in every price range. Incredible buying skills, so Bloomingdales or whomever will be sooo lucky to have these ladies’ skills!

  5. I always shopped at the banyan tree and loved it. Will miss shopping there and will miss the ladies who worked there. They were always very nice and helpful when i was there. Best of luck!

  6. It was a lovely store, I’ll miss it. Val and Kate were always helpful and friendly when I went in.
