On March 9, 2013 Officers Jennifer Horn and Caesar Mazzeo arrested Raul Campoverde, age 25 from Newark and charged him with the following offenses and crimes:

  • DWI
  • Refusal to submit breath samples
  • DWI in a school zone
  • Eluding
  • Obstruction
  • Endangering the welfare of a child
  • Possession of a weapon
  • Possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose

While stopped at the intersection of Bloomfield Ave. and Ella St. at a red light and in their patrol car, Officers Horn and Mazzeo witnessed a gray, four door, Honda Accord pass them on the right and go through the red light, traveling at an approximate speed of 80 mph. The Officers followed the suspect vehicle eastbound on Bloomfield Ave. and watched as it abruptly turned into the driveway of 176 Bloomfield Ave. and stopped behind a building.

As the Officers approached the vehicle on foot, Officer Mazzeo noticed that there was a young child standing on the rear seat of the car, holding onto the front seat headrest. The driver / arrestee, ignored the Officers orders to exit the vehicle and observed him reaching toward the floor of the vehicle with his left hand. Further commands by the Officers for the driver to exit the vehicle were ignored and he was again observed reaching to his left for something inside the driver’s side door pocket. At this point the Officers restrained the driver and removed him from the car.

As the driver fought with the Officers outside of the car they immediately detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. After the driver was secured, the Officers found a small wooden baseball bat inside of the driver’s side door pocket where he was reaching.

With the driver under arrest and the weapon secured the Officer’s were able to question a female front seat passenger. The 23 year old female from Newark told the Officers that the child in the back seat was the daughter of the driver, Mr. Campoverde. She also relayed that Mr. Campoverde does not have legal custody of his daughter. That privilege belongs to Mr. Campoverde’s sister who was contacted and responded to the scene to pick up the child.

While at HQ’s the arrestee continued to be uncooperative and was subsequently charged with the above listed motor vehicle offenses and crimes.

The Honorable Judge Paparazzo set bail at $100,000.00 and a court date is pending.
