iris dementCONTEST CLOSED: Winner Chosen

Iris Dement, who has been described as possessing “one of the great voices in contemporary popular music: powerfully, ringingly clear, capable of both heartbreaking fragility and blow-your-ears-back power,” will perform this Friday night at Outpost in The Burbs and we have two tickets to give away to one lucky reader.

Sixteen years after the last collection of DeMent songs, that time has come. Sing The Delta presents twelve self-penned compositions from an artist whose first three albums established her as one of the most beloved and respected writers and singers in American music. DeMent, the last of 14 children, born in Arkansas and raised in Southern California, grew up immersed in gospel music and traditional country. She was somewhat of a late bloomer as an artist, writing her first song at age of 25. Her first releaseInfamous Angel immediately established her as a promising and talented artist. Its 1994 follow-up, My Life, earned a Grammy nomination in the Contemporary Folk category. Her 1996 album The Way I Should addressed political as well as personal themes and earned a Grammy nomination, as well.

  1. With the man who always has been and always will be perfect for me…my husband of 36 years. We are one of the olds now..but the other night we were grocery shopping and out of the blue he just stopped and told me how cute I looked. He makes me smile all the time. (don’t worry-he also knows how to push all my “mad” buttons too) He just knows how to make my days..and nights.;)

  2. “But hold on to your lover for your hearts bound to die.”
