Kids Milk and Cookie Baking Competition: And the Winners Are….

Yesterday, Take Back the Kitchen’s first annual Kids Milk and Cookie Baking Competition took place at MontclairTV34 studio. Sponsored by King Arthur Flour Company and Five Acre Farms, who donated milk, the event was designed to include kids who are often excluded from bake sales because of allergies and sensitivities: vegan, gluten free and whole wheat categories. It also raised funds for Toni’s Soup Kitchen with the recipe submissions.

There was entertainment for families provided by The Amazing Aidan, a 12 years old magician, and Jazz music by Maya and Jeremy Stepansky , 14 year old twins from Renaissance Middle School in Montclair.

The cookie entries were blind-tasted and judged by Emmanuela Mujica, Jamie Busch and Sally Weston Owens in specific categories:

Vegan Judge: Sally Weston Owens, founder of So Tasty Vegan
For many Americans food is bought not made. It doesn’t build self-esteem. It stifles creativity. Sally Owens is lucky. Growing up, most items on the shelf might as well have had a NO SALLY sign stamped on them because they included what for Sally were life threatening dairy products. But twenty years later nobody need shed a tear for Sally for she’s had no choice but to be creative in the kitchen. And all she has to show for it is a diverse career of vegan artistry that’s taken her from California to New York City and now happily back home to Montclair where she’s currently hosting vegan pop-up dinners at Trattoria Rustica.

Whole Wheat Flour Judge: Jamie Busch is a father, chef, health researcher, and life learner. His entrepreneurial spirit has led him into working as a Private Chef: the family chef to Gwyneth Paltrow, into Event Catering: intimate private dinners to 100+ person parties; Organic Gardening: from building raised bed “kitchen” gardens to managing a sustainable market garden in the Dallas, TX area; and Workshop Facilitator: from conference speaker to leading small groups on weekend retreats. Currently, Jamie creates memorable events in the Metro NYC area through his creative catering company and is currently developing a farm-fresh prepared food company called Let’spoon.

Gluten Free Judge: Emmanuela Mujica is a highly motivated individual with experience in management, ecology and biology, urban farming/raising hens, community outreach, event planning, nonprofit leadership and management, grassroots community activism and volunteerism. Particularly interested in the farm-to-table movement; forming and/or being part of an organization and a community with an emphasis on healthy, affordable, sustainable food production and distribution. Emmanuela works at the Greater Newark Conservancy and started the Chickenism and Lil Sprouts Club through 4-H at the Israel Crane House. Check out her blog here.
