Signs of Change in Montclair Center (Updated)

Signs of Change in Montclair Center

Update: Flurry tells us: “There were no municipal funds spent on this. Signs and installation are paid by a State Transit Village grant to the Township of Montclair. Design was paid for by the Montclair Center BID.”

(Readers may remember the controversial — and ultimately abandoned — $800,000 wayfinding project).

If you’re at the corner of Maple Avenue and Bloomfield, you can now find directions to Crane Park, The Wellmont Theatre, Church Street Shops, with new signage popping all over Montclair Center.

Montclair Center BID’s Luther Flurry had been coy about these new structures that have been popping up, but today he finally writes:

“Signs of things to come! Great work by Arterial, Carrie Chatterson Studio, and Allied Environmental Signage.”

We’ve spotted another sign in progress at the corner of Glenridge Ave. & Grove Street.

  1. Ye olde Wayfinding Project! In the works for over a decade… I wonder how much it ended up costing?

  2. And what happens when one of the places on the signs (for example…..The Welmont)goes out of business?

  3. Glad to hear there was a grant. It was an insane amount of $ that was proposed to come out of town coffers. Good job, BID!

  4. Now that almost everybody has GPS in their phone or car, they add more visual clutter to the environment. All we really need is “P” for parking signs.

  5. And the grant is paid for by……OUR TAXES!
Worse yet, the state floats bonds and the payments for the bond are paid for by…… OUR TAXES!
Enough of this “nice to have” crap. Fix our infrastructure. Fill the potholes. Taxpayers of this state shouldn’t be footing the bill for signage or pots of flowers or brick sidewalks or any of this other fluff that grants are used to fund.

  6. Thank you, Howard Beale. This idea that we can wastefully spend money as long as it is “someone else’s” has resulted in every one of us paying daily in our tax dollars at all levels for a huge debt.

Montclair’s fake attempts to be all what it isn’t eventually become eyesores: think only of the fake Elmer’s glue “red brick” crosswalks installed at ridiculous expense.

Hey, there are no “wayfinding signs” at the corner of South Mountain and Gates! How will I ever find my way home?
