Camp Ask Holly Week 1: Fourth of July Parade Flag Waver

parade flag waver

What screams “I love America!” more than a child  all decked out in red, white and blue watching a 4th of July parade? Pretty much nothing. But try putting one of these cute parade flag wavers in that child’s hand and watch that Yankee Doodle Dandy smile from ear to ear. Now that my friends is America the beautiful.

All you need to make this week’s Camp Ask Holly Parade Flag Waver is some patriotic colored duct tape, a paint stirrer, and a small dime store flag. Yep, that’s it. They are durable, easy and waterproof to protect against those who go a bit wild with the supersoakers at the parade.

 Parade Flag WaverParade Flag Waver:

  • Duct tape in red, white, blue or special 4th of July patterns available in stores now
    • A wooden paint stick or large 24″ American flag
    • Small 11″ American flags
  • Curling ribbon or silver pipe cleaners (optional)
  • Stickers (optional)

Parade Flag WaverStep One: For the paint stick. Cover the stick by tearing off a piece of tape a bit longer than the stick. Now wrap it around the stick and trim the end up and fold over. Do the same on the other side of the stick. None of this needs to be anything close to perfect. Just cover the sticks and have fun.

Step Two: Decorate the stick with more duct tape or stickers. Let the kids go to town.

Step Three: Tear off long 24″ inch strips of tape and fold them over  leaving a inch of sticky side open. Cut the strips into smaller strips with a scissor stopping about 2″ before the end. make about 4 strips in different colors. Again don’t worry about perfection. Trim off any messy bits.

Step Four: Press the sticky ends of your strips around the end of your stick. Now insert the end of your small flag in the middle. Tape around the base of the strips to hold in place.

EXTRAS: Add red, white and blue curling ribbon or silver pipe cleaners twisted into spirals at the ends.

For the 24″ flag: Follow the same steps as with the stick wrapping the flag’s stick and make the base your strips about 4″ down from the base of the flag.

Confession time—my son is not exactly in all-American gear with his PSV Eindhoven NL  shirt, but it looks great right?

After all that flag waving and parade watching, you’ll be hungry for these Red, White and Blue Strawberry Cheesecake in a Jar.
