Montclair Jazz Festival: Hear Live Music, See Live Music, Be Live Music

Montclair Jazz FestivalIn a town that has a film festival and a  food and wine festival, you gotta have a jazz festival. And Montclair has one—an amazing one with the 4th annual Montclair Jazz Festival Saturday. The full day of swinging music happens on Saturday, August 17 in Nishuane Park from noon to 8 pm. — and yes, this is a first — there will be a beer garden!

Produced by Jazz House Kids under the direction of its jazz powerhouse duo—jazz vocalist & recording artist Melissa Walker and with creative direction from bass virtuoso Christian McBride—the Montclair Jazz Festival features world-class artistry in a family-friendly environment.

“It’s been exciting to see how in just a few short years, our festival has blossomed into one of New Jersey’s significant summer music events with more than 3,500 in attendance,” says Melissa Walker, president and founder of Jazz House Kids.  “Montclair, known for its arts scene, now has a jazz festival to add to its cultural offerings.”

The 2013 Line  up includes:

  • Christian McBride with special guests Kenny Barron and Carl Allen
  • Anat Cohen & the Choro Ensemble
  • Oscar Perez Nuevo Comienzo with special guest Melissa Walker
  • Ed Palermo Big Band does Zappa & More
  • Freddie Hendrix Septet
  • Jazz House Kids Large Ensembles

Between acts the talented students from  Jazz House Kids  Summer Music Workshop will perform and WBGO Jazz 88.3FM’s on-air host Gary Walker will be on hand to emcee.

Bring lawn chairs or blankets. You can pack a picnic too, but food vendors are there for tasty options.  And new in 2013 is a Beer Garden sponsored by North Coast Brewing Co. In partnership with the Thelonious Monk Institute, North Coast Brewing has created a special beer (proceeds of which benefit the Institute), Brother Thelonious, which will be one of four beers for fans to sample this year.

The show goes on rain or shine, with the rain location at the Salvation Army Citadel, 13 Trinity Place in Montclair.

  1. This is one of the best things to do in the summer in Montclair! Looking forward to heading over to Nishuane Park to see it again this year!

  2. Just lawn chairs for us, the kids on a blanket, and plenty of sun screen lotion. I’ll probably whip up a salad for the Tupperware and pour a cool and soothing drink into a thermos to match the music. And such a great location. Montclair at its finest.

  3. I’m looking forward to the North Coast Brewing Beer Garden. They have some fantastic brews and would love to try some Brother Thelonious on tap, which would be very apropo for the festival.
