hyacinth-millsLast year, Montclair resident Hyacinth Mills was one of nearly 80 entrepreneurs from across New Jersey to participate in the first annual Start Something Challenge, a statewide pitch competition and business strengthening opportunity for New Jersey entrepreneurs.

Mills took third place in the competition, winning $5,000 to go toward her dream of opening a health food restaurant.

The Start Something Challenge is now launching its second competition. Organized by the Jersey City-based Rising Tide Capital, a non-profit organization that helps underserved entrepreneurs start and grow successful businesses, the Challenge is a business pitch competition. It also provides participants with opportunities to learn about local business resources, network with business experts, gain visibility and receive hands-on coaching and mentorship, give every participant has the best-possible chance at winning the $10,000 top prize.

“Entering the Start Something Challenge and having a fixed deadline really propelled me to get a clear picture of my business and exactly what I wanted to do,” said Mills. “If you’re thinking about entering, go for it.”

Free to enter, the competition is open to any New Jersey resident over 18 years old who operates a microbusiness earning less than $250,000 annually, or has a strong business idea. Rising Tide Capital will be offering a Start Something Challenge workshop on Tuesday, August 27 from 6:30-8:30pm at the Hudson County Community College in Jersey City. To learn more, visit
