Bloomfield Mayor Ray McCarthy was at Brookdale ShopRite’s checkout counters today asking “paper or plastic?”
For the past several years, Mayor McCarthy bags groceries to raise awareness by symbolically “bagging” hunger in the community and raise funds for local community food banks as part of ShopRite Partners in Caring Day.
“During the hour that Bloomfield’s Mayor bags groceries for us today, we’re donating 10% of the sales receipts to local food banks,” said General Manager Jerry Manley, ” and we’re also matching 100% any donations collected at checkout.”
Nearly 50 million Americans, including more than 16 million children are suffering from hunger. September is National Hunger Action Month, but ”ShopRite Partners in Caring,” the corporation’s community based, hunger fighting charity, operates year round. Since its inception in 1999, ShopRite Partners in Caring has donated $29 million to local food banks which support more than 1,700 charities in the Northeast.
