Bored with the typical movie-dinner-drink date night? The owners of Java Love in Upper Montclair (conveniently located by Bellevue Cinema) welcome you to mix it up a bit and drop by for “Chocolate Fondue Night” on Saturdays from 6-9pm.
My husband and I were there for the inaugural event last weekend, and it was just as sweet as it sounds. Owners Jodi Dawson and Kristine Petrik serve a generous pot of warm fondue, along with an array of dippers: fresh and dried fruit, salty snacks such as pretzels and chips, and the fixin’s for do-it-yourself s’mores.
The folks at Java Love make the fondue by melting together a little cream and an artisanal dark chocolate bar, which they buy from Susan Fine’s phenomenal Chocolate Path. That dollop of dairy explains why my husband, who normally prefers milk chocolate, agreed with me that the fondue was heavenly–velvety and rich, but not overly sweet, nor bitter.
Why fondue night? Dawson says “Customers always ask us if we are going to stay open later, and this seemed like a great place to start. And fondue is fun!”
An order of fondue costs $15.95 for two people, $24.95 for four. For non-chocoholics, mini key lime pies and other delicious desserts from The Pie Store are also available.
Of course, fondue doesn’t need to be reserved exclusively for date night. You can also try it on an evening out with friends, to reward a chocolate-loving child, or simply as a retro-cool way to celebrate the weekend.
