An upscale vintage home goods store, studio, and local arts and crafts marketplace is opening on Friday in Montclair’s GLAM district, with items as unique as its name: {verdigreen}.

Owner Azie Shelhorse is an avid upcycler who designs, custom hand-paints, and reupholsters aged, loved furnishings for the modern home. The Chicago-born entrepreneur describes her style as bohemian-eclectic, and has stocked her store with one-of-a-kind statement pieces.

“I’ve always been into art and design, ever since I was a young girl,” says Shelhorse. “As an adult, what started as a jobby–a cross between a job and a hobby–evolved, and I’ve been selling on Etsy for three years. Then my husband and I opened ourselves to the idea of a storefront, and everything flowed into place.”

The work of other local artists will be sold in the shop, as well. “I am a big supporter of community effort and showcasing talented artists,” says Shelhorse. “It’s a collective. I feel strongly about helping other talented people, including lots of moms like me, by showcasing their work in my shop.”

What brought Shelhorse and her family to Montclair? “My husband got a job in the city two years ago, so we were looking for a good family town with great schools, and fell in love with Montclair. The art and culture scene here appealed to me. It’s progressive and diverse, yet has a small town feeling.”

Shelhorse plans to incorporate the area’s welcoming, family-friendly vibe into {verdigreen}. The store is arranged into various living areas, to allow shoppers to picture how items could fit into their own home. There’s even a designated play area in the store for children. They may join Shelhorse’s own two young sons, who’ll sometimes be “helping” her in the shop.

The artrepreneur is planning on hosting wine tastings, arts and crafts nights, and classes–such as a chalk paint tutorial. “We love entertaining, and this is an extension of that,” says Shelhorse. Her first big event is this Friday, when the grand opening of {verdigreen} will coincide with Montclair Center’s “A Little Night Art XII”, a self-guided art walk around Montclair.

Shelhorse piggybacked the events on purpose. “I went on the spring art walk, and it was a really good opportunity to go into stores I hadn’t visited before–less intimidating.” She says her GLAM business neighbors, many of whom will also participate in the art walk, have been welcoming and helpful. “I already feel like a part of the community,” says Shelhorse, “which is a wonderful feeling for a newbie on the block.”

  1. These type of store are some of my favorite to check out in montclair. No one item is the same as the next. Im going to have to hide my wallet. Best of luck.

  2. Was able to attend the grand opening and loved it. The store was filled with unique vintage curiosities. Lots of beautifully upholstered chairs and no two things were alike. In addition to wonderful seating options, there were also several cool gift ideas, ranging from magnets made of vintage buttons to sari quilts. A wonderful place to get lost in and Azie knows her stuff! Will be back.
