Former deputy mayor and retired deputy police chief Roger S. Terry will be honored as the 2013 recipient of The One Hundred Club of Montclair’s Giblin and Gardner Community Service Award, on Wednesday, December 4, at the Montclair Golf Club in West Orange.
“Roger has spent his life serving the people of Montclair, first in the Public Works Department, then in the Police Department where he rose to the rank of Deputy Chief, and most recently as Councilman-at-Large and Deputy Mayor,” One Hundred club president Raymond R. Connell said.
“His positive influence and example – particularly to at-risk youth in the Township – have yielded immeasurable benefits,” Connell added. “Roger’s love of the Township and the Police Department are well known and, as such, he is the perfect recipient for the Giblin and Gardner Award in 2013.”
The honor of receiving an award named in part for former Police Chief Giblin who died earlier this month, is humbling for Terry. “As I was coming up through the ranks, Chief Giblin was a tremendous leader and a mentor from whom I learned a great deal. To receive an award in his name is incredible,” Terry said.
The One Hundred Club of Montclair maintains a fund established to benefit the family members of policemen and firemen injured or killed in the line of duty and to provide scholarships to the qualifying children of Montclair policemen and firemen. All proceeds from the dinner will be added to that fund.
The Giblin and Gardner Community Service Award was created five years ago and named in honor of former Police Chief Edward A. Giblin and former Fire Chief John W. Gardner. It is awarded annually to a Montclair resident who exemplifies the virtues of Community Service.
The 48th annual dinner and membership meeting will begin with a cocktail hour at 6:00 pm and dinner will follow at 7:00 pm. First time guests can attend for $100. 2014 Membership dues, including the dinner are $125. Those interested in attending should contact Club Secretary Bernice F. Connell at 744-6753 or Membership Chairman Michael D. Byrne at 746-3280.
