bluebirdThey certainly appear to be prepping for Valentine’s Day over there in the County Executive’s office…offering classes on birding, beekeeping, and even an essential oil love potion workshop.

And there’s more. Throughout February, the Essex County Environmental Center is offering a variety of classes to teach adults (and older children) about nature and the environment. There are courses on everything from chair yoga, to seed starting, to creating art from found wood.

Here are three particularly interesting choices:

1. “Three-Day Short Course on Beekeeping” is for adults and children ages 12 and older.

The Essex County Beekeepers Society will present this short course appropriate for new beekeepers as well as those who need a refresher.

The course will take participants through a full year of beekeeping, including everything they need to know from purchasing and assembling equipment to harvesting, extracting, and bottling honey. Basics of disease and mite management and control will be covered.

Cost is $150 per person and includes ECBS/NJBA membership, continental breakfast, and afternoon snack. For more information or to register, visit www.njbeekeepers.org or contact Pat Gamsby at [email protected] or 973-396-8996.

Dates: Saturdays, February 15 & 22; Field Day TBA
Rain Date: March 1, 2014
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

2. “Build a Bird House” is for adults and children ages 10 and older who are accompanied by an adult.

Join the Environmental Center staff during National Nest Box Week and build a home that encourages breeding birds and other wildlife to take residence. Putting out a bird house now creates a good chance of having a nesting pair of songbirds in the garden by spring.

And we can get this project completed in time for Montclair's sesquicentennial when we can stick a fork into historic preservation as a public policy.
