The Montclair community will once again come together for an evening of music, community-building, and support for Haiti at the Fifth Annual Concert for Haiti on Saturday, January 25th.
A diverse line-up of musicians will perform at this fundraiser for Edeyo Foundation, Lamp for Haiti and the Haitian Education and Leadership Program (HELP). As always, Montclair students will be an integral part of the event, learning about how their efforts can help improve the lives of students in Haiti.
This year’s concert will feature Emeline Michel, a Haitian singer-songwriter who has been called “The Joni Mitchell of Haiti.” Her songs merge native Haitian compas and rara with jazz, pop, bossa nova, and samba. She has performed internationally at major venues and festivals, including Carnegie Hall, Montreal Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz Fest, and many more.
Also performing will be Montclair High School’s Passing Notes a cappella group, Big Mamou (Zydeco), Zing Experience (Haitian roots, rock and reggae), Jazz House Kids, Montclair’s Oxygen Box Band, and a group featuring Cantor Meredith Greenberg, Leora Perlman and Bob Mellman from Temple Ner Tamid, along with Eva Goldfarb and Rob Maskin.
Edeyo Foundation has provided free education, food, water, and social support to the children of the impoverished Bel-Air neighborhood in Port-au-Prince for the past six years. Bel-Air is a “red-zone” neighborhood that receives no international NGO support due to security concerns.
The Haitian Education and Leadership Program (HELP) has provided university scholarships to high performing high school graduates throughout Haiti based solely on merit and need since 1996.
Lamp for Haiti reduces the causes of ill health by engaging in water and sanitation projects, supporting local schools, and providing health education and humanitarian aid.
