Athena Collaborative Group, a non-profit organization that supports, encourages and empowers women to enter into Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers, has announced the 3rd Annual March Mathness will take place March 14 – 31 in Montclair.
March Mathness offer a variety of fun, informative and exciting math and science related activities at multiple locales throughout town for kids of all ages.
Planned 2014 festival activities include a Pi Day celebration, a Math Bee Contest, STEM Career Panel, a learn to code class, Music and Math and much more!
A full schedule of events and registration information will be published in March at www.montclairmarchmathness.org .
March Mathness is an all-volunteer community based response to a stark national problem of women and STEM careers:
- Currently, 8 out of 10 of the fastest growing occupations are science, math, or technology-related
- Between 2004 and 2014, jobs requiring science, engineering, or technology training will increase 22%
- Though there is a huge shortage of engineers in the US, only 14% are women
- While women comprise about half of the overall workforce, only 26% or less are in math, science or engineering roles
- Math confidence is a linchpin to success in these roles
“Research has shown that interest among girls is there, it just needs to be encouraged.”, says Christina DelliSanti-Miller, Founder of Athena Collaborative Group. “March Mathness will provide opportunities to participate in STEM related activities and exposure to what it means to work in a STEM profession. It will give parents, teachers and the community the tools to begin to embrace and encourage new career possibilities for our daughters.”
Although March Mathness is a fun festival it has the very serious purpose of raising the confidence of girls to move beyond societal constraints so they will stay open to possibilities of STEM careers. The activities are designed to begin to build the skills and confidence needed to prepare for a future without limits and to help girls thrive in Math and Science education.
“The ultimate goal of the March Mathness Festival is to raise awareness and provide resources to prepare girls for a full range of STEM careers, including high-paying math and science based roles.” says DelliSanti-Miller. “And to inspire kids, parents and teachers.”
