Celebrate the Arrival of May in Montclair with May Day Flower Crowns

May Day Flower Crowns

The first of May is traditionally known as May Day and is celebrated to chase away the winter snow and welcome spring.  And Montclair truly celebrates the arrival of May with a month full of celebrations.

Join in the festivities of the arrival of May by making these beautiful felt May Day Flower Crowns for the family:

May Day Flower Crowns

  • Felt, in flower and leaf colors
  • 1/2 inch wide elastic, about 6-10 inches long
  • Thread
  • Sewing needle
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Pattern

Download the pattern and cut out the template.  Trace onto felt and cut out.

Start with the two large petal strips. Fold each petal in half and sew the middle together.  Repeat for each petal on the strip.  Put large strips to the side.

Roll the small strip of petals, anchoring it with stitches as you go.   Add a large strip of petals, by rolling it around the first grouping.  Make adjustments as you roll it around.  When you are happy with the design, secure in place by stitching around the base.  Roll the second large strip around the flower to cover any remaining holes.  Sew around the flower the secure in place.

Cut out two pieces of green felt, about 16 inches in length and 2 inches wide for the headband.  (You might need to piece your headband together.)

Sew your leaves and flowers to your felt.  After sewing on the fabric, sew the second strip to the back of the flowers leaving ends open for the elastic.

Attach elastic to each end.  Make adjustments in length for the person whose head will be wearing it.  Secure the elastic in place by sewing over it many times.  Optional: Add decorative ribbon to the end of the elastic.
