Montclair Crime: Man Struck, Robbed on Orange Road

The week in crime from D/Lt. David O’Dowd, Montclair Police Department:

Robbery:

On 5/27/2014 at approx. 0030Hrs, a 22yoa Newark man reported that he was the victim of a robbery on Orange Road in the South End. The victim stated that he was walking, when he noticed that he was being followed by two males. The males approached and the victim was struck from behind. These suspects removed $50 from the victim’s pocket, and then fled the area on foot. The suspects are described as:

Suspect 1 – Light skin black male, 20-25yoa, 5’6, 180lbs, wearing a black skull cap, black sweatshirt, black North face brand sweat pants, and black Nike brand ACG shoes.

Suspect 2 – Medium skin black male, 5’11, 150lbs, thin build, short black crew cut style hair, wearing a dark jacket, blue Mavi brand jeans, and white Air-Force 1 sneakers.

Arrests:

On 5/20/2014 at 1919Hrs, Officers were patrolling in the area of Bloomfield Avenue and New Street when they observed a party known to have a warrant. Isaiah Boatwright, 24 yoa, of Montclair was arrested on a Montclair warrant for $40,000, for the charge of Aggravated Assault.

On 5/22/2014 Officers stopped a vehicle on Grove Street for a suspended license. The vehicle operator, Tajli S. Powell-Watkins, 27yoa from Montclair, was found to have open warrants out of Little Falls and Union City totaling $948.00. This party was arrested and held on these warrants.

On 05/26/2014 at 1740Hrs, Officers observed a vehicle making an illegal left turn off Bloomfield Avenue near the Glenridge border. The vehicle operator, Annette Acevedo, 50yoa from Newark, was found to have a suspended license. She was also found to have open warrants out of Newark, Edison, and Union totaling $1050. Ms. Acevedo was arrested and held on these warrants. She was also issued summonses for motor vehicle violations.

Theft:

On 5/2/2014, a Roosevelt Place resident was the victim of a theft of a FedEx package. The package in question contained an Apple Macbook pro valued at $3,000. FedEx confirms that the package in question was delivered to the lobby of the victim’s apartment building. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Montclair Police Detective Bureau, Det. T. On 05/22/2014 at approximately 0850Hrs, an East Orange woman was the victim of theft from her vehicle, parked at 35 Lackawanna Plaza. The vehicle, a Chevrolet Equinox, had inadvertently been left unlocked. Taken from this vehicle were a Samsung Galaxy 3 cell phone and numerous credit cards. MISCELLANEOUS:

On 5/22/2014 a Montclair business owner received a telephone call from a male claiming to be a representative of PSE&G. This subject stated that the electricity to that location was due to be shut-off and the only way to avoid this action was immediate payment. This party then advised the business owner to purchase a Green Dot money card from CVS and call him back with its number and redemption code. The business owner became suspicious and contacted PSE&G via their published telephone number. PSE&G advised that this is a common telephone scam and to refuse payment.
Montclair residents are reminded to always call the published corporate main telephone number and verify the identity of solicitors for any company requesting money or payment for services.

On 05/24/2014 at 0120Hrs, Montclair Police and the Fire Department responded to an apartment fire on Orange Road. Upon arriving, Officers observing a heavy smoke condition were successful in evacuating the first floor residents. MFD evacuated the second floor residents who were trapped upstairs due to the smoke. MFD is working to determine the cause of the fire.
