Casey Borella, an 8th grader at Montclair Kimberley Academy, auditioned to sing the National Anthem at a NJ Jackals game this past spring. After listening to her sing in the video above, it’s no surprise that the 13 year old was one of the chosen singers. She sang the Star Spangled Banner beautifully last Saturday, July 12, opening up the game where the Jackals defeated the Saltdogs 10-2.

Casey says she has been singing as long as she can remember, but has been taking formal voice classes for the past three years with a teacher at School of Rock (SOR) Montclair.

“When I first came to the school I was originally just learning how to control my voice and sing properly. For the first two years of my time at SOR, I had Sibvon Rose as my voice teacher. She was probably the one who initially made me stick with singing, and I cannot thank her enough for all she did for me as a teacher, mentor, and friend, says Casey.

Casey wants to thank all the other SOR teachers who have helped her and adds, “I’ve studied on and off with Phil Silverberg for two years as well, he’s not my current full-time voice teacher as he is my keyboard instructor, but I’ve learned a lot from him. He’s really introduced me to different styles of singing and music. Currently, my voice teacher is Lewis Robinson. I’ve had him for around a year and he’s absolutely incredible. He’s taught me so much about my voice, what I’m capable of with respect to range, and music theory. All of the auditions I’ve had he’s helped me prep for, and he’s just a really wonderful teacher. I also participate in Chorus and Chamber Singers at school under the direction of Maria Gillmartin. She is very supportive and also pushes me — she rounds out my vocal training.”

Barbara Rudy of the NJ Jackals says they auditioned 25 singers and choose performers who sing the right words and right tune without embellishments.

“Casey did a great  job and that’s why she was chosen!,” said Rudy.

Singing on key not required but considered a plus.

What a nice rendition. I love the high five with the mascot at the end!

I'm struck by how much attention is being paid to the details of a parking lot, as opposed to the attention paid to the future impact of the monstrous projects being planned.
