Drums of Thunder is part of the Hillside School’s percussion program under the direction of teacher and artistic director Louis D’Amico, and is comprised of dedicated 4th and 5th grade percussion players whose quality and professionalism is maintained through rigorous daily group practice held in school. The acclaimed performance program offers students at Hillside School a chance to gain valuable musical skills as well as to build confidence through their many public appearances.
Drums of Thunder has traveled throughout the East Coast to perform in a host of prestigious venues from live appearances on NBC’s The Today Show and LXTV, to recent engagements at professional NFL, NBA, the US Open Tennis, Time Square’s Superbowl Boulevard, as well as at college sporting events including the Atlantic 10 Women’s Championships and West Point Military Academy. They also regularly perform at opening ceremonies like Citipond in New York City and honorary events such the Pac-12 Award Ceremony at Gotham Hall in 2012. Drums of Thunder has also opened for headline acts such as Bill Cosby and Earth Wind and Fire.
“It’s an honor for these kids to be selected for to play at such a prestigious venue like Super Bowl Boulevard. Like all their public appearances, this will stand as a reward for their hard earned efforts and provide them with great positive feedback,” says D’Amico.
“Hillside is the Gifted and Talented magnet elementary school in Montclair,” says principal Mike Chiles, “and Drums of Thunder is a great program for kids to showcase their talents and build their character.”
