We love Montclair Art Museum’s Free First Thursday Nights. Who wouldn’t? You get free museum admission, live music, fun activities, a full-service bar, and great food to enjoy—it’s a great night out.
Offerings change on a monthly basis, and First Thursday Night on Thursday, February 5, offers fabulous fun.
In anticipation of MAM’s forthcoming exhibition Come as You Are: Art of the 1990s, Montclair’s own School of Rock will perform a Nirvana Tribute Show. Expect the evening to “Smell [and Sound] Like Teen Spirit!” For a more chill listening pleasure, The Silver Fox Songs Quartet will feature a collection of jazz and/or soul standards from the 1930s through the 1960s, paying tribute to song stylists from Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin in MAM’s galleries.
In honor of Black History Month, Museum docents will lead tours highlighting works by African American artists in MAM’s permanent collection, including Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence. Ahava Felicidad, Montclair’s “Holistic Hair Healer,” will present natural hair care and the art of hair braiding in MAM’s studios.
Exhibitions on view include highlights from the Museum’s collection and a new Native American art installation of Pueblo Indian Pottery. Additionally, student exhibitions feature works made in the Yard School of Art and through community partnerships with MAM’s Education Department. Students from Millburn High School’s AP Studio Art Program will also be recognized for their support of the Museum in a special presentation at 6 p.m. The students raised money for the Museum through a drawing project. Taking inspiration from MAM’s historic building, they were commissioned to draw homes for members of the community in exchange for a donation to the Museum.
Create your own art in the Yard School of Art drop-in Draw Along Workshop. A Free First Thursday Night favorite, this workshop includes instruction with a professional teaching artist and a free session with a model. It’s offered for all ages and abilities, so don’t miss the chance to try your hand at drawing the figure.
Pig & Prince Restaurant & Gastro-Lounge will serve an extensive variety of libations, including a signature cocktail, wines, and choice beer for purchase. Pink Cupcakes of West Orange will offer tasty Valentine’s Day treats and the Thai Elephant Food Truck will be on site for hungry patrons to grab a meal.
