Gus & Co. Seafood Opening in Montclair This Spring

The long-awaited Gus & Co. Seafood will soon open in Upper Montclair at 626 Valley Road.

Baristanet got a sneak peek of the shop over the weekend where owner Paul Gustavsen is working hard on the finishing touches before opening day this spring.

Gustavsen worked as a fishmonger at New York’s Fulton Fish Market for the past 25 years. Now the Caldwell resident is bringing his experience and vast knowledge of seafood to town, providing Montclair with what he says is “the finest hand-selected seafood from the Market,” which he will have delivered to Gus & Co. daily.

In addition to fresh, raw seafood, Gus & Co. will sell prepared food—made on-site by his chef and himself—such as lobster rolls, crab cakes, chowders, and fish tacos. Gus & Co. will also offer seasonings, condiments, lemons…everything you need to enjoy a fresh fish meal at home. Seafood platters will be also available to order for catered events. Want something special you don’t see on ice? Gustavsen says they will be happy to take special orders. Above all, he hopes Gus & Co. will also inspire customers to try new things, discover delicious fish they didn’t know of, and learn how to cook great seafood.

  1. A good fish market is something Montclair has needed for a long time. The fish market in Caldwell is terrific but what a schlep! I’ll be checking out Gux & Co as soon as possible!

  2. Many years ago UM had a seafood store on Bellevue Ave. near where Stone Cold Creamery is located now. W

  3. Very excited. Hope it’s not as expensive as the place from Barnegat Point in the Farmer’s Market.

  4. YUM!!!! One of the great joys of cooking is asking a fishmonger, “what’s this?” And giving it a try.

    Can’t wait.

  5. Stopped by there to say hello and check out the seafood. Paul is a doll, so personable and knowledgeable. Offered me tastings of freshly prepared lobster and the most amazing chowder I’ve ever tasted. Everything is so fresh and nicely showcased. Bought lobster salad (made before my eyes with a ton of huge chunks of lobster + a bit of seasoning), crab cakes, scallops, mussels. Nice touch throwing in a whole lemon with my purchase. I’ll go back over and over again for the chowder, and hopefully Paul will have some lobster rolls ready to savor. Great addition to our town.
