Manhole Explosions in Montclair and Verona Cause Road Closures

manhole explosionThe Montclair Police Department has reported at 5:30 pm this evening, they received a report of numerous manholes exploding on Claremont Avenue between North Mountain Avenue and the Verona border. As a result of this incident there is a sinkhole on Bloomfield Avenue at the intersection of Sunset Avenue in Verona.

The following streets are closed in both directions:

  • Bloomfield Avenue is closed at the intersection of Pompton Avenue, Verona, to the intersection of South Mountain Avenue (Montclair).
  • Claremont Avenue is closed from North Mountain Avenue to the Verona border.
  • MPD says there are no reported injuries or power outages at this time. Both PSE&G and the Montclair and Verona Fire Departments are on scene investigating the cause of the explosion.

    1. Just drove through the Scenic Exploding Manhole District (5:30am). Roads are all reopened, with traffic cones on the manholes; but, upper Claremont Ave smells like the entire neighborhood ate some bad enchiladas. Hope the MPD didn’t notice me accelerating to 70 to get out of there quick.

    2. Had the misfortune of driving through that area last night, shortly after this happened. What a navigational mess that was.

    3. Montclair Police Dept sends out a Nixle alert for every traffic cone and road alert, but for this – an explosion and closure of a main artery of the town, they dont notify the public for 2 Hours (7:25pm at the end of rush hour)

    4. Do we know specifically what caused the manhole explosions? Bloomfield Avenue may be back to normal but one block in, on upper Claremont Avenue, PSEG is venting several manholes. There have been barricades and venting pipes sticking out of the road since Tuesday evening. Still there today.
