Officers Corey Graves, Steven Mateo, Shawn McMackin, Brian Klukowicz and David Osborne, Jr. were sworn in on Monday as Montclair Police Department probationary officers by Municipal Clerk Linda Wanat in township Council Chambers.
Officer Corey D. Graves is a Rutgers University graduate who earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice and public service in May of 2013. He served as a Community Service Officer with Rutgers University and assisted university security operations in conjunction with the university police department. He graduated from the Union County Police Academy in June 2014 and since that time has served as a police officer with the Rutgers University Police Department. Officer Graves will wear badge #262.
Officer Steven E. Mateo graduated Montclair State University in December of 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in justice studies and is a 2013 graduate of the Bergen County Police Academy. Officer Mateo previously served with the East Orange Police Department as a police officer in patrol. Officer Mateo will wear badge #263.
Officer Shawn P. McMackin earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology at Hofstra University in December, 2007 and the following year signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets. He graduated from the Essex County Police Academy in December 2013 as a Special Law Enforcement Officer Class Two (SLEOII) and subsequently served with the Essex County Sherriff’s Office as a deputy sheriff. He is also certified as an emergency medical technician. Officer McMackin will wear badge #264.
Officer Brian G. Klukowicz University of Maryland-Baltimore County graduate, earning his with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in December of 2012. He graduated from the Essex County Police Academy in August 2014 as an SLEO II and afterwards served with the Essex County Sherriff’s Office as a deputy sheriff. He is also certified as a security officer, having trained and registered as required by the NJ Security Officer Registration Act. Officer Klukowicz will wear badge #265.
Officer David M. Osborne Jr. graduated Wagner College in May of 2005 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. He worked with the Montville Board of Education since 2007 as a substitute teacher and athletics coach and in 2012 became a Montclair Police Department dispatcher. Officer Osborne is registered to attend the 22-week Basic Course for Police Officers beginning May 1 at the Essex County College Public Safety Academy. Officer Osborne will wear badge #266.
After preliminary uniform/equipment outfitting and agency indoctrination training, Officers Graves and Mateo will commence their field training program. Officers McMackin and Klukowicz will continue additional Police Academy training to further their Basic Police Officer certifications.
All officers will undergo a field training program where each will be paired with specially trained, experienced patrol officers or FTOs. The training curriculum covers a wide number of topics ranging from departmental operations, at-scene criminal investigations, and handling domestic violence incidents, to traffic enforcement and issues of homeland security.
The trainees rotate through different trainers and shifts while receiving daily standardized evaluations based on performance. These evaluations are periodically reviewed by the Field Training Program Supervisor. Progress is then assessed prior to the trainee’s completion of training and final assignment to the Patrol Division by the Chief of Police.
