Portraits by Michael StahlIt’s hard to feel independent when food for your family is hard to come by. To help out, Portraits by Michael Stahl in Montclair will open its studio for holiday portraits in exchange for groceries to donate to the Montclair Human Needs Food Pantry.

On Saturday, July 4, stop by the studio in your red, white and blue and they’ll create a portrait for you that you can share on your social media sites. The studio at 11 Midland Avenue—right on the parade route.

“I am aware of the crazy convergence with the real life story playing out upstate,” Milchman, a 1987 graduate of Montclair High, told Baristanet.

Name: Janette Afsharian

Where do you live? Upper Montclair near the Iris gardens.

When did you move there? September 2006

Where did you grow up? Iran until I was 7, then Texas.

How do you make a living? After college I was hired to be a stockbroker in Austin, Texas. Within a month I had to break it to my dad that I wanted to do something in the “arts” instead. He was not happy – at all.  I moved to New York and started working for WNET as a graphic designer. Twenty years later, I’m still making a living as a graphic designer.

Weekend Highlights: Your Guide to Family Fun

It’s the weekend! There are lots of fun and family friendly things going on in our area and we’ve rounded them up right here for you. Check ‘em out!

Comic Con

The Montclair Public Library (50 S. Fullerton Avenue, Montclair) will host their first ever Comic Con from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Saturday in partnership with East Side Mags, Gamers Paradise and Just Kidding Around. There will be a day full of fun including scavenger hunts, previews of upcoming games, artist-author panels, arts and crafts for all ages, raffles and prizes at every hour, a costume contest and cosplay. Featured artist-author speakers will be there between 1:45 PM and 4:00 PM and included Jorge Aguirre (Dragons Beware, Giants Beware), Paul Castiglia (TMNT, Archie), Eric Davies (Hero Machine), Brian Smith (The Stuff of Legend, Voltron Force), Stephen Coughlin (Sanctuary) and Vincent Delvecchio Jr (local artist). After the event, head on up to the 3rd floor to enroll in the Summer Reading Club.
