Baristanet Profile: Mary Marino-Slous

Mary Marino-Slous

The latest installment of our Baristanet Profile series, where we get to know the people in our neighborhood:

Name: Mary Marino-Slous

Where do you live? Montclair

When did you move there? Six years ago. From Brooklyn. I met a great guy. We got married. My first marriage! We tried living together in Brooklyn but the commute was tough. He’s an attorney in Montclair. I made the big sacrifice. It came with a garage, LOTS of closet space and a back yard. I miss a lot of things about Brooklyn but I LOVE a lot of things about Montclair.

Where did you grow up? West Virginia. When I first moved here lots of people didn’t even know it was a state. They would ask me if it was near Virginia Beach. Over the last 10 years it’s better known. It’s all mountains and coal mines. And Italians. Yes. Lots of them. My people! Love it. Miss it. I visit often BUT I’ve been destined to be a city girl since I was three.

How do you make a living? I was a fashion industry executive for over 20 years. Most notably Chico’s. I was Design Director there for six years. When I got married I wanted to do something on my own. I started as a website for women over 40. Mostly to blog about fashion. The jewelry collection happened because I wanted to be in the marketplace again. I missed designing. I like making and selling. (Editor’s note: Mary  will show and sell her work at a Pop Up Shop in the Wade Maxx Gallery (618 Valley Road in the Upper Montclair shopping district) Grand Opening celebration on Thursday, October, 8 from 5 to 9 pm)

Coffee, tea or … ? Coffee. It’s what gets me out of bed in the morning. I cannot understand people who don’t like coffee. One of my best friends only drinks Diet Coke. A six pack a day starting first thing in the morning. I love her. In spite of her crazy coke habit.

What’s your idea of a perfect Saturday? Coffee ASAP. Workout. Then lounging all day with piles of books. I hardly EVER get a day like this and rarely get looooong stretches of time just to read. Sometimes on vacation…

What’s your favorite local restaurant? I can NEVER pick just one favorite thing. Or one favorite restaurant. Scala del Nonna. Their pasta dishes…OMG I like Egan’s. It’s the first place I think of when we decide not to cook. MishMish and Ani Ramen for lunch. I’m also waiting for The Turtle + The Wolf to open.

What’s on your nightstand? BOOKS. Piles of them. I’ve got several going at any given time. My Nook has helped me to manage the overflow but it has not stopped me from amassing the real things.

What are you listening to? Pandora mostly. This is embarrassing because I used to buy music like I buy books. Leonard Cohen is at the top of my favorites list.  He’s got it all going on. Lyrics, music, style and sex appeal.

What are your current addictions? And this you MUST ask! I have many. Husband. Sisters. Friends. Pets. Food. Wine. Shoes. And JEWELRY! I forgot. Books & Music. The Yankees. But until I met Larry, my husband, eight years ago, I had never even been to a little league game. Nada. Now I have my own scorebook.

Talent you would most like to have. I wish I was multi-lingual. Since we’re talking fantasy. I would like to have the secret power to be able to speak fluently in any language. For instance, as my plane touches down in Istanbul, I start yammering away in Turkish. And on and on around the world.

What’s the worst-kept secret about Montclair? I don’t know. It’s a secret….

What do you hope they say about you at your funeral? She was always good for a laugh. Most people would need a wheelbarrow to carry the jewelry she wore just to walk her dog. Does anyone here have her meatball recipe?

  1. This Mary Marino-Slous from Montclair by way of Brooklyn and West Virginia has got real chutzpah.

Dump Larry the attorney and marry me!

  2. Hi Mary,
Welcome to my hometown, Montclair! I’m a native, and I love this town!
I enjoy your fashionista website, especially the hand carved mogul earrings! Now that my hair is short, it’s all about the earrings!
I’m gong to mark my calendar and try to attend your Pop Up Shop on the 8th. In the meantime, won’t you consider coming to a local breast cancer benefit?
