Take A Trip To The (Local) Farm

Get away to the farm — without the drive.

Hillcrest Farms has been serving Essex County for 70 years. In the fall, the store offers a variety of mums, pumpkins and gourds of all sizes and varieties. You’ll also find a selection of fall decorations including hay bales, corn stalks and Indian corn. While the adults are busy checking out the store, the children can enjoy the onsite petting zoo featuring pigs, chickens, goats and sheep.

Hillcrest Farms is located at 377 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and on Sunday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Morgan Farm and Museum, a part of the Cedar Grove Historical Society, is a piece of history right in our backyard. The 14-acre property was farmed continuously from the mid-1800s until 1985. At that time, Courtenay Morgan donated the farm to the Township of Cedar Grove. The house now serves as a museum showing life in the early 20th century.

A farm stand is also operated on the property every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM until the end of October selling produce “as local as it gets.” We hear there’s an amazing continuous cascade of vegetables.

The museum is open to visitors on the third Saturday of every month from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, or at other times by appointment. The site also hosts a variety of events throughout the year. There are volunteer opportunities available as well. The website hosts and archive of the Cedar Grove Historical Society newsletters, which offer much of the rich history of the estate.

The Morgan Farm and Museum is located at 903 Pompton Avenue, Cedar Grove.

  1. Also nearby is Ploch’s Farm on Grove St. in Clifton. I “discovered” this completely by accident. They’re already closed for the season but offer fresh locally-grown produce all summer.
