Vital Restaurant & Juice Bar (387 Bloomfield Avenue) has been offering Montclair “Health food with a Caribbean twist” for a little over a year now. Now, sibling owners, Kwame and Nataki Williams, have introduced an expanded menu to offer more Jamaican cuisine to its loyal customers.

Inspired by the traditional Jamaican “Ital” diet, Executive Chef Kwame Williams uses only pure ingredients and makes everything from scratch.  His cooking preserves food at its most natural state and pays “tribute to the body as a temple.”  Classically trained at The Institute of Culinary Education, Kwame has 13 years of culinary experience in fine dining establishments that include the Ryland Inn, Pleasantdale Chateau, Highlawn Pavillion, The Bernards Inn and Minton’s.  He combines his formal training and Ital philosophies to create vibrant, flavorful dishes that provide innovative new takes on traditional Jamaican staples.

New on the dinner menu are escovitched fish, curry shrimp, curry goat, braised oxtail and jerk chicken.

Vegan favorites include jerk portabella and curried cauliflower. The menu also features ever-changing soups that incorporate fresh, seasonal ingredients. Still on the menu is Kwame’s signature Vital hummus — made with black-eyed peas and hemp seeds and served with crispy plantain chips—and fresh juices, smoothies and elixirs.

Complimenting the dining experience, Friday nights are now “Vital Vibes,” with live music performances with a line-up of soulful jazz, reggae, rock and R&B.
