Weekend Highlights: Your Guide to Family Fun

It’s Valentine’s Day weekend! We’ve rounded up plenty of fun activities the whole family can enjoy!

On Saturday, the Montclair Public Library (50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair) will host a Drop-In Valentine Station in the main library’s Youth Services Department. Stop by from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM to make a Valentine’s Day card. Supplies such as construction paper, crayons, color pencils, glue and decorations will be provided. No registration is required but space is limited. All are welcome, but preference given to cardholders, so please bring your card.

 

The Glen Ridge Public Library (240 Ridgewood Avenue, Glen Ridge) will also host a Valentine’s Day Craft for Kids. Drop in any time between 9:30 AM and 4:00 PM to make a craft for someone special.

Also on Saturday, Just Kidding at Symphony Space (2537 Broadway, NYC) will present a family Valentine’s weekend concert with Elizabeth Mitchell and special guests at 11:00 AM.  All tickets are $18. Enjoy homespun renditions of songs by Woody Guthrie, Bob Marley, The Velvet Underground, Vashti Bunyan, Gillian Welch, and more. Other performers include members of the Brooklyn Bluegrass ensemble, The M Shanghai String Band, and Simi Stone.   

 

All weekend long, Play Fair will be held at The Javits Center (655 W. 34th Street, NYC). This event is a celebration of play and entertainment for all ages. There will be hands-on exhibits, and many displays including a variety of current brands and toys of tomorrow. Sessions are from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM both Saturday and Sunday. Tickets start at $30 per session with discounts and multi-packs available.

Studio Players (14 Alvin Place, Upper Montclair) will present Robin Hood and the Fairy Tale Friends to the Rescue on Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM. Join Robin Hood and the fairy tale friends as they band together to stop evil Mayor Trick Tricky from destroying the forest. Tickets are $8.  

 

On Sunday, the Newark Museum (49 Washington Street, Newark) will celebrate Valentine’s Day during its Second Sunday Program. A Museum Explorer’s Valentine’s Teen Tour will begin at 12:30 PM. Gallery tours will be available for Celebrate the Artists of the Harlem Renaissance at 1:15 PM Wondrous Worlds: Art & Islam through Time and Place at 2:15 PM. Specially designed activities inspired by the collections and the celebration of love and Valentine’s Day will be tucked throughout the Museum from 12:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Other activities including lectures and a performance are scheduled as well.

 

The Montclair Historical Society will host its monthly 2nd Sunday Family FunDay on Sunday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Crane House and Historic YWCA. This month, make a Victorian valentine, take tours on the hour (last tour at 3:00 PM) and participate in a scavenger hunt. Learn about history in a fun and interactive way. Admission is $10/family.

Family entertainer Steve Woyce will present The Caboose Mystery on Sunday at 1:30 PM at Greenberg’s Great Train & Toy Show at the Garden State Exhibit Center (50 Atrium Drive, Somerset). The train show will feature huge model train displays as well as seminars and activities for kids. Children under 12 are free; adults are $7 in advance and $9 at the door. The show is open on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and tickets are good for the entire weekend. There is no additional charge for The Caboose Mystery.
