Weekend Highlights: Your Guide to Family Fun

The weekend is here! Looking for something fun to do with the family? We’ve rounded up a bunch of activities to help you spend your time!

Welcome to the Symphony

On Saturday at 11:00 AM, the Montclair Public Library (50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair) will host children’s author Carolyn Sloan to read her book, Welcome to the Symphony. Recordings from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony will be played as children are introduced to the power of classical music. There will also be musicians on hand for a meet-and-greet and kids will get to have a hands-on experience with their musical instruments. This event is for children ages 3-8. Registration is required.

The East Rutherford Memorial Library (143 Boiling Springs Avenue, East Rutherford) will continue their Random Acts of Kindness program on Saturday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. In this session, participants will make a braided toy for the dogs of the Bergen County Animal Shelter. All ages are welcome and registration is suggested. Participants must bring an old t-shirt which will be used to make the toy.

Also on Saturday at 10:30 AM, the Essex County Environmental Center (621B Eagle Rock Avenue, Roseland) will host Build a Birdhouse for adults and children ages 10 and older who are accompanied by an adult. Participants will build a birdhouse that encourages breeding birds and other wildlife to take residence. Cost is $8 per child and $10 per adult and advance registration is required.

 

The Montclair Art Museum (3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair) will host a Family Art Adventure on Saturday from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. This hour-long, drop-in event allows children age 5 and up with an adult companion to explore and discuss art and participate in activities around the galleries and sculpture garden. Tickets are $15 per family for non-members, $6 per family for members.

Studio Players (14 Alvin Place, Upper Montclair) will present Robin Hood and the Fairy Tale Friends to the Rescue on Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM. Join Robin Hood and the fairy tale friends as they band together to stop evil Mayor Trick Tricky from destroying the forest. Tickets are $8.  

 

On Sunday, the South Orange Symphony will present a free family-friendly ‘Winter Carnival” at 3:00 PM in the auditorium of South Orange Middle School (70 North Ridgewood Road, South Orange). Hear music from Bizet, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Shostakovich, and selections from “Star Wars” by John Williams. Children can visit the musical instrument “petting zoo” and dance the waltz from Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty ballet. There will also be a silent auction fundraiser. This event is free.

 

BOOKofD1RGB-300x244The Growing Stage (7 Ledgewood Avenue, Netcong) will present a new play, The Book of D on Sunday at 4:00 PM. This play is recommended for children ages 8 and up, and centers on young D, an outcast who escapes into a world of stories. He struggles with his parents’ divorce, his lack of friends, and more. He makes a new friend who introduces him to Greek mythology, and the friendship becomes a new story.
