The YMCA of Montclair’s 2015 Black History Month program

The YMCA of Montclair is hosting a series of events in celebration of Black History Month. All events are free and open to the community. In addition to the events, a photographic display in the lobby of the Park Street Branch honoring ancestors of YMCA of Montclair members will add to the month’s celebration of our community’s rich cultural heritage.

Black History Lecture Series
February 22 at 9:30 am
Holm Room, Park Street Branch (25 Park Street, Montclair)
Historian, consultant and researcher Dr. Linda Epps will address the impact of African American migration patterns on American life and culture. Award winning author Sharon Dennis Wyeth will discuss the historical and culture relevance of her work. Something Beautiful and The Granddaughter Necklace, two award winning children’s books by Sharon Dennis Wyeth, are a testament to the strength to be found in family and community. The author will read from her work and say a few words about how personal experience and the exploration of family history are the genesis of her writing.

Black History Re-dedication Celebration
February 23  at 6:30 pm
Geyer Family Branch (159 Glenridge Ave, Montclair)
“Past to Present – Honoring our Ancestors and Their Journey” – a celebration to honor those frequently unknown and unrecognized who existed before Emancipation. Participants will reflect on a family member from the past.

“Glory” Movie Screening and Discussion
February 25  at 10 am
Senior Center, Park Street Branch (25 Park Street, Montclair)
A culmination of the celebration of Black History Month will feature the screening of the epic film, “Glory,” which tells the story of the first African American military unit of the Union Army during the Civil War. A discussion will follow.
