Zoe Foglizzo and Mia Ellis, Montclair High School alumni at Tufts University, have joined other students to build anaffordable and accessible nursing school in Trinidad, Honduras. In order to raise funds, the women have organized a Concert & Fundraiser Party on Saturday, June 11. The event will feature an amazing variety of live music to support this initiative. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon of outdoor a cappella and pop music from Montclair’s own Passing Notes, Forth Wanderers, Birsa Chatterjee, and Ella McDonald. Plus, light snacks and soft drinks will be served.

After traveling to Honduras on a medical service trip, Tufts University student Marianna Marquez decided to build a team (including Zoe and Mia) to create Trinidad School of Nursing. It is in Honduras that she had witnessed a dramatic shortage of medical professionals. Marianna had spoken to numerous young community members who wished they had the means to become a medical practitioner. She also heard many community leaders speak of the lack of educational opportunity to get into the medical field. This lack of educational opportunity is directly tied to the country’s poor economy. Zoe and Mia are now partnered with the nonprofit Action for Education, and UNITEC, a top university in Honduras that has agreed to assist with the bureaucratic processes and are currently working on developing the curriculum.

“Growing up in Montclair taught us the importance of community, acceptance, and taking action to help others. We are Montclair High School class of 2014 and 2015 Alumni, and although we are now at Tufts University, these values still stick with us, as it does in other Montclair community members,” says Zoe.
