Weekend Family Highlights: Films, Father’s Day, and Fun!

Cinderella_2015_official_posterIt’s Father’s Day Weekend! We’re giving a shout out to all the dads – enjoy your day! We’ve also rounded up some fun and family-friendly activities to enjoy.


Start the weekend with a free movie at Kips Castle (22 Crestmont Avenue, Verona). Catch a screening of Cinderella (2015) on the lawn and under the stars. Arrive early for some pre-movie entertainment. Gates open at 7:00 PM and the movie will begin at dusk. Concessions will be available for sale. Admission is free. Rain date is Saturday, June 18th.


On Saturday, Sunshine Sam Toy Store (127 Valley Road, Montclair) will sponsor the first annual Lulu & Leo Fund Super Artist Day. Twenty percent of store sales will be donated directly to The Fund. Start the day at 10:30 AM with Jason Kirschner who will read from his new children’s book, Mr. Particular. From 11:30 to 1:30, MAUDE, the Creativity Caravan’s Airstream will make an appearance with lots of fun inside. Throughout the day until 3:00 PM, there will be a variety of crafts and games available for the whole family to enjoy.


Also on Saturday, City Green will host a Strawberry Festival at the Farm Eco Center (171 Grove Street, Clifton). From 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, enjoy family activities, crafts, and workshops. You can also pick your own strawberries and enjoy live music!


MAM FAAThe Montclair Art Museum (3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair) has a weekend of fun planned. On Saturday, join them for the MAM Family Art Adventure, an hour-long, drop-in gallery program where families can explore and discuss artworks and engage in fun activities throughout the galleries and sculpture garden. Tickets are $15 per family ($6 for members). The program runs from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.


The Cooper Gristmill (66 Route 513, Chester Township) will host a People-Power Day. Watch demonstrations of tools powered by the force of the human body. Use your hands and feet to try some of these unique tools yourself. Take a tour of historic Cooper Gristmill that was built in 1826 and is still operational today. The event runs from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Admission is free but donations are accepted.


Also on Saturday, Fosterfields Living Historical Farm (73 Kahdena Road, Morris Township) will host a Farm Fun Day. Make paper crafts to take home and play family-friendly games that were popular long ago. Venture out to the farm and enjoy kid-friendly chores like churning butter, cracking corn, and more. There’s plenty to do on this 1920s farm! The event will be held from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Admission is $6 per adult; $5 per senior (65+); $4 per child (4-16); $2 per child (2&3) and free for children under age 2.


Railway Museum

On Sunday, take Dad for a train ride departing from the Whippany Railway Museum (1 Railroad Plaza, Whippany). There are three 45-minute round trip excursions to choose from: 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. Travel the route of the historic Whippanong Trail through Whippany, East Hanover, Livingston, and Roseland. Admission is $17 for adults; $12 for children under 12; and free for children 1 year or younger for the Club Car. Admission for Caboose Seating is $14 for adults; $9 for children under 12; and free for children 1 year or younger. Purchase tickets in advance online. Tickets include admission to the museum grounds and building.


Nutley will host its annual Father’s Day Street Fair (Franklin Avenue between Centre and Chestnut Streets) on Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. With over 100 merchandise vendors, nonstop music and entertainment, face painting, temporary tattoos, sand art, pony rides, petting zoo, kiddie rides, climbing wall, and games, there’s something for everyone!
