MHS Swimming Defeats Glen Ridge and Falls to Millburn

Montclair High School was eagerly anticipating its match-up with Glen Ridge on Friday, December 2nd in the Ridgers first season in the conference, but was stunned when MHS Varsity Coach Koenigsfest learned on the day of the meet that Glen Ridge would be swimming as a co-ed team and not as separate boys and girls teams. The effect of that unexpected development, which was the subject of discussion within the conference as well as with NJSIAA, was that the Mountie girls were not allowed to swim in the meet, as co-ed teams are essentially considered boys teams with girls as members.

Co-captain and senior Lina Koschik said, “We were so disappointed that we didn’t have the opportunity to swim against the Glen Ridge girls. It seems like someone should have told us sooner than the day of the meet.” The Mountie boys handily defeated the Ridgers’ co-ed team 120 – 50, sweeping the 200 free, 100 fly and 100 breast. The Mountie boys dropped only one event to the Ridgers.

Montclair took on the Millers of Millburn at the Newark Academy natatorium on Monday, December 5. Although the Mountie girls and Miller girls each won four events and tied in three events, when the points were totaled, the Mountie girls suffered their first defeat of the season 92-78. Freshman standout Mia Padberg took first in the 200 IM and the 100 breast and sophomore Kathrynna Demetillo edged out Millburn to take first in the 100 back. The foursome of Padberg, Demetillo, junior Amy Chen and senior Samantha Corredor finished in first place in both the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay.

The Mountie boys turned in season’s-best times, and just touched out the Millers in several nail-biters, but they were unable to hold off Millburn as they endured their first loss of the season 92-78. Boys’ team co-captain, senior Kai Michaud, just touched out Millburn for first place in both the 200 and 500 free and junior Steven Iovine and sophomore Thatcher Smith took first in the 50 free and 100 back, respectively. The Mounties prevailed in the 400 free relay with Michaud, co-captain and senior Makai Charles, freshman Justin Ellis and Smith.

Montclair takes on Caldwell at home on Friday, December 9 at 8:30 pm, MSU Panzer pool.
