Since Montclair’s own Pinegrove released its breakthrough album Cardinal earlier this year, the band has been touring the world and making new fans. One of the Pinegrove’s newest audiences is the staff at NPR Music, which gathered around to hear Evan Stephens Hall and crew play a Tiny Desk Concert.
If you’re new to the Tiny Desk, it’s a long-running NPR series in which bands set up around the desks in the newsroom and play live for the NPR Music crew. Pinegrove offered a four-song set—“Need,” “Angelina,” “Old Friends” and “Waveform”—that mixed tracks from Cardinal alongside earlier material.
The concert caps off a big year for the band. New York magazine’s Vulture site named Cardinal one of its top albums of the year, and Pitchfork included the record in its list of The 20 Best Rock Albums of 2016, noting “The Saddle Creek-tinged Americana rock on display here is skilled as it conveys a sense of effortlessness.”
