Weekend Family Highlights: A Christmas Story, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, and Santa!

Happy Weekend! There’s plenty to do around town and beyond. Take a look at some of the events happening in our area.


Studio Players (14 Alvin Place, Upper Montclair) will present The Cat in the Hat this weekend. The classic book by Dr. Seuss has been adapted for the stage in this live action production. Performances will be hold on both Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM. Tickets are $8 and can be ordered at Brown Paper Tickets or by calling the box office at 973-744-9752.

On both Saturday and Sunday, Clairidge Bow-Tie Cinemas (486 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair) will show A Christmas Story at 11:00 AM. Bring the kids to see this holiday classic on the big screen! This movie is rated PG.


NJPAC (1 Center Street, Newark) will present Brown Bear, Brown Bear & Other Treasured Stories by Eric Carle on Saturday at 11:00 AM. With a blend of innovative puppetry and striking scenic effects, the show brings to life some beloved children’s stories. Tickets are $13 – $22. The show is one hour long.

Bloomfield Recreation Department will host their annual Children’s Holiday Program will be hold on Saturday from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Civic Center (84 Broad Street). Children will enjoy refreshments, arts and crafts, face painting and pictures with Santa.

Reeves-Reed Arboretum (165 Hobart Avenue, Summit) will host Cookies & Cocoa with Santa on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Have your picture taken with Santa in the Arboretum’s beautifully decorated, historic Wisner House. Holiday portraits will be taken by local photographer Lisa Berkery and they are $10 per child.


Just Kidding at Symphony Space (2537 Broadway, NYC) will present multi GRAMMY-nominated Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players on Saturday at 11:00 AM. This rocking music is fun for kids and parents alike! Kids can dance and jump around, enjoying a style that’s been compared to Elvis Costello and Green Day. Expected run time is 60 minutes and tickets are $17 ($14 for members).

Santa will be at Applegate Farm (book your time slot here) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Santa will also be at Just Kidding Around (507 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair) on Saturday from noon to 3 PM.

On Sunday, The Creativity Caravan will host a Tiny Book Making Workshop at Montclair Pop Up (310 Orange Road, Montclair) from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. This event is fun for all ages. Stop by to make a tiny book to give as a holiday gift! The cost is $10 per person and all materials are supplied.


Jersey City Theater Center|JCTC Kids will present Alice In Wonderland by Puppetworks at Merseles Studios (339 Newark Avenue, 2nd Floor, Jersey City) at 1:00 PM on Sunday. This classic tale has been adapted for marionettes by Nicholas Coppola. Audience members will also have the opportunity to meet with the puppeteer after the show. Advance tickets are $9 per child and $10 per adult. At the door, tickets are $11 per child and $12 per adult.

Also on Sunday, stop by Montclair Art Museum for Drop-In Studio between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The new Helen & Bill Geyer Art Studio will be stocked with a range of art materials to explore with a seasoned MAM studio instructor. This is free for members and included in Museum admission for non-members.
