Weekend Family Highlights: Year of the Rooster, Mammoth Follies, Alex and The Kaleidoscope

Let’s hear it for the weekend! There are plenty of fun and family-friendly things to do and we’ve rounded some of them up right here. Check ‘em out!

On Friday evening, Glen Ridge Public Library will host A Night with Scooby & Gang, open to grades 6 through 12, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. This event features a character costume contest, cartoons, games, crafts, prizes, and more. Dinner and dessert will be served. Register online.

Mammoth Follies

South Orange Performing Arts Center (One SOPAC Way, South Orange) will present Mammoth Follies on Saturday at 2:00 PM. Recommended for ages 6-12, this educational production dramatizes historic and scientific facts and myths about the age of dinosaurs. This production is performed by Hudson Vagabond Puppets. Tickets are $20.

Alex and the Kaleidoscope in Concert
Also on Saturday, Just Kidding at Symphony Space (2537 Broadway, NYC) will host Alex and the Kaleidoscope in Concert at 11:00 AM. Join Alex and his band on a musical journey around the world, captivating kids and stirring their imaginations. Tickets are $17 ($14 for members).

State Theatre New Jersey (15 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick) will host Suzi Shelton as part of its Milk & Cookies series on Saturday at 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. This show is recommended for children ages 3-6 and is full of pop-rock songs about real-life kid issues. This event is free. Reserve your seats online.

Year of the Rooster
Year of the Rooster: Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company

NJPAC (1 Center Street, Newark) will present Year of the Rooster: Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company on Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 PM. This award-winning event celebrates China’s Spring Festival, combining the elegance of traditional Asian art and the beauty of American modern dance. Enjoy demonstrations and fun activities staged in the lobby before the performance. Tickets are $15-$37 each and available online.

Fastrack_GameOpen-300x198Sunshine Sam (127 Valley Road, Montclair) will host a Fastrack Tournament on Sunday afternoon. Slots are available for Beginners (ages 4-7) at 1:00 PM, Intermediates (ages 8-12) at 2:00 PM, and Pros (Ages 13+ including adults) at 3:00 PM. Fastrack is one of the store’s best-selling games and is fun for all ages. Simply use one hand and the elastic band to fire discs into a slot on your opponent’s side of the board. Winners of each tournament receive a Mini-Fastrack and a $20 Sunshine Sam Gift Certificate. There will also be discounts all day and other prizes for participants.

On Sunday (and most Sundays through March 12), enjoy an afternoon of guided snowshoeing on the trails of Pyramid Mountain NHA (473 Boonton Avenue, Montville Twp). Use your own showshoes or rent a pair. No experience is necessary. This event is free and for children ages 10 and up with their adult companions. Preregistration is required.

Also on Sunday, Montclair Public Library (50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair) will host a Mother Goose Storytime at 1:30 PM. This activity is for children age 3-6 as a way to promote literacy among preschool-aged children. Children of all abilities are welcome. No registration is required. Space is limited. Preference given to Montclair Library Cardholders, so bring your card.

Maple Sugaring Demonstrations continue this weekend at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center (247 Southern Blvd., Chatham Township). Learn about the process of maple sugaring, identify and tap maple trees, collect sap, and make syrup over a wood-fired evaporator. Demonstrations are one hour in length and begin at 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Cost is $3 per person age 3 and up. No registration is required but seating is first come, first served.

Also on Sunday, stop by Montclair Art Museum for Drop-In Studio between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The new Helen & Bill Geyer Art Studio will be stocked with a range of art materials to explore with a seasoned MAM studio instructor. This is free for members and included in Museum admission for non-members.
