Health and social policy expert Magda Schaler-Haynes will speak on “The Growing Peril to Reproductive Rights” at Bnai Keshet’s Kaplan Minyan on Saturday morning, February 11. The Kaplan Minyan, which meets in the Red Gables historic house across the parking lot from the synagogue’s main building, begins at 10:30 a.m. with selected songs and readings.
Schaler-Haynes is an attorney specializing in health and social policy, reproductive health care, health reform and health plan regulation. As an independent consultant, she provides research-driven strategic guidance to diverse public, non-profit and private sector clients. Schaler-Haynes’ recent work for the Center for Reproductive Rights includes serving as Amicus Manager in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, the successful U.S. Supreme Court challenge to Texas’s abortion clinic shutdown law. Until June of 2015, she served as Special Advisor for health care and women’s issues to U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ). Previously, she served on the health reform team for New York as Senior Health Policy Advisor at the New York State Insurance Department. Schaler-Haynes is Adjunct Assistant Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University where her current courses include Public Health Law and Money, Politics and Law: Abortion and Public Health.
