Firefighters at work on house at Waterbury Road.

On April 16th around 9am, Montclair Fire Department firefighters working at Headquarters noticed heavy smoke coming from a nearby neighborhood. MFD units followed the smoke and arrived at a two family home on Mission St with its second floor engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control within an hour. Units from East Orange, West Orange, Clifton, and Bloomfield responded to the scene, while units from Paterson, Cedar Grove, and Verona covered the town. Fire damage was complete to the second floor, partial to the 3rd floor, smoke and water damage throughout the house. There was also minor damage to the homes on either side of the fire building. No injuries were reported.
Later that day at 3pm the MFD received a call from a homeowner on Waterbury Rd reporting that they saw smoke near their roof. MFD units responded to find a smoke condition issuing from the roof area.

Firefighters cut a hole in the roof for ventilation and extinguished the fire. There was moderate fire damage to the attic framing members and ceiling joists, smoke and some water damage throughout the rest of the house. Units from Bloomfield, Clifton, and West Orange covered the town during the fire. No injuries were reported.

The cause of both fires are under investigation, according to Deputy Chief Robert Duncan, Montclair Fire Department
