Former Navy Helicopter Pilot To Take On Rep. Frelinghuysen

There’s a new Sherill in town.

That would be Mikie Sherill, a former Navy helicopter pilot and Montclair mother of four, who plans to run against Rep. Frelinghuysen.

Sherill announced her plans in a statement today:

“I am a former Navy helicopter pilot, a former federal prosecutor, and a mother of four. I have spent most of my life fighting for our country and our values. As a mother, you’d better believe I will continue to fight to ensure our children have a bright future.

Donald Trump is now threatening everything we hold dear. His impulsive behavior threatens our national security. The way he talks about women threatens not only the progress we have made during my lifetime, but the opportunities I want to ensure for my daughters. And the way he uses fear to divide our country threatens the fabric of who we are as Americans.

Our Congressman, Rodney Frelinghuysen, is voting straight down the line with Donald Trump. After 22 years in Washington, Congressman Frelinghuysen has stopped listening to us – refusing to even meet with constituents – and is putting Donald Trump and the Republican leaders in Congress first.

I’m running for Congress because we can do better.

We need to work to create a better future. New Jersey has always been a hotbed of innovation – we have more scientists and engineers per square mile than anywhere else in the country. We need to ensure Americans have access to affordable college, tax reform that supports the middle class, and to decrease wasteful spending to special interests. Repealing the Affordable Care Act and putting the insurance industry back in charge of healthcare would be a disaster. And we can’t allow Rodney Frelinghuysen and Donald Trump to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood.

Mikie has a Bachelor’s degree from the United States Naval Academy, a Master’s degree in Global History from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a Law Degree from Georgetown University.

Mikie and her husband Jason, a fellow Naval Academy graduate, live in Montclair, New Jersey, where they are raising their four children ages 11, 10, 7 and 5. Mikie coaches her daughter’s lacrosse team and manages her son’s soccer team

“Global History” pretty much covers it.

Annapolis, LSE, & Georgetown. Pretty impressive. Global History versus what…Economics?

I do think the Navy Pilot*Prosecutor*Mom tag line needs to be tweaked. At the risk of being PI, Mom? You don’t see male politicians using Fatherhood in their tag lines. Having progeny is reason to vote for someone?

Looks like an appealing candidate and I am sure the slice of Upper Montclair in the 11th District will love her. Not so sure how she will play out with the crowd at Adam’s Beer Garden, The Telemark Tavern, and the Mt. Hope Inn but hey, you never know. I wish her well.

I want a viable alternative to Rep. Frelinghuysen…but, little contradictions at this stage are worrisome for this candidate.

Look at the family photo on her homepage. Women’s rights? Seriously? I don’t think so based on that photo.

And we can get this project completed in time for Montclair's sesquicentennial when we can stick a fork into historic preservation as a public policy.
