Weekend Family Highlights: Chalk Walk 2017, Nishuane Mayfair, Family Garden Party

The weekend is here! We’ve rounded up lots of fun and family-friendly activities in and around the area. Check ‘em out!

Barnes & Noble at Clifton Commons (395 Route 3 East, Clifton) will host a Little Ree Storytime on Saturday at 11:00 AM. New York Times bestselling author and Food Network star Ree Drummond’s new picture book based on life on the ranch. Activities will follow.

The Montclair Center BID invites kids to draw on Church Street at Chalk Walk 2017 (Montclair) on Saturday from 2-7 p.m. Volunteers from Montclair State University and the Montclair Art Museum art truck will be there to assist the young artists. The street will be closed to traffic. Young artists will be given a red artist’s neckerchief. Kids can create their own designs or color the Matisse-inspired designs that will be outlined. There will be live music beginning at 5:30 PM.

Dirt & Noise is hosting an artsy, get downright creative KIDS ART EVENT on Saturday, May 20 from 2pm-4pm on Church Street in conjunction with the Matisse Week Chalk Walk 2017. Activities will include DIY CHALK from Yin from L3 Academy, Creative Sidewalk Chalk Drawing from the The Creativity Caravan with their Craft Cycle, glitter tattoos from Just Kidding Around Montclair and more.

Nishuane School (32 Cedar Avenue, Montclair) will host its annual Mayfair on Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This carnival is open to the community and will over activities for kids age 2+ including arts and crafts, bouncy houses, inflatable slides and obstacle course. There will also be an international food court. Montclair Animal Shelter will host an adoption station, raffle baskets, and a silent auction. MHS’ vocal group Passing Notes and local musicians Jason Didner and the Jungle Gym Jam will perform. Admission is $10 per child age 2+ and includes all activities except food, raffle, and auction. Cash and credit cards will be accepted. This event is rain or shine.

Also on Saturday, Robin Hood at the May Faire will take place on the front lawn of St. James Episcopal Church (581 Valley Road, Upper Montclair) at 1:30 PM. This event is produced by Montclair Early Music with sponsorship from Montclair Foundation. Henry VIII will tell the story of Robin Hood. This inter-generational event will feature Medieval instruments, singing, dancing, and audience participation. This event is free and you may reserve tickets online.

Glen Ridge Public Library (240 Ridgewood Avenue, Glen Ridge) will host Lego Day on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Drop in any time to build amazing creations with the huge Lego collection. All ages are welcome.

The Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs will host a Family Garden Party at Presby Memorial Iris Gardens (474 Upper Mountain Avenue, Montclair) on Saturday from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This free community event includes entertainment, crafts, face painting, food trucks, information booths, and more. Rain date is Sunday, May 21st.

The Aviation Hall of Fame of New Jersey (400 Fred Wehran Drive, Teterboro) will host an Open Cockpit Weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The display includes a variety of aircraft. Get an up-close look at these planes, helicopters, and more. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for children and seniors. Access to the museum is included.

The Newark Museum (49 Washington Street, Newark) will host Creative Play sessions on Saturday at 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. This one-hour program is designed especially for early learners ages 3-5 and includes a visit to a gallery and an activity. This month’s theme is DYI Become a Maker: Be creative while using your imagination. This week’s activity is Paper Making.

The final performance of the season for Just Kidding at Symphony Space (2537 Broadway, NYC) will present Beatbox Bonanza with Rahzel on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Rahzel M. Brown is an influential American musician, beatboxer, and rapper who is known for his ability to sing or rap while simultaneously beatboxing. Rahzel will lead a workshop for the next generation of beatboxers, helping kids learn to make percussive sounds with only their mouths and vocal chords. This event is appropriate for children age 4 and up. Tickets are $17 ($14 for members).

On Sunday from 2- 4 p.m., Montclair Public Library (50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair) will host Mini-golf Day in the Library. Rain or shine, play 9 holes of mini-golf in the Children’s Department on the 3rd Floor. No registration required. All ages are welcome. Children ages 7 and under must have an adult with them to participate

Also on Sunday, stop by Montclair Art Museum for Drop-In Studio between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The new Helen & Bill Geyer Art Studio will be stocked with a range of art materials to explore with a seasoned MAM studio instructor. This is free for members and included in Museum admission for non-members.
