The weekend is here! There’s so much to do around town and beyond. Here’s a sampling of activities for the whole family.
First of all, check out the family-friendly films at the Montclair Film Festival this weekend.
On Saturday, don’t miss the North Fullerton Arts & Crafts Fair (10 am -t 5 p.m., 24 North Fullerton Ave. , Montclair). Community outdoor event with hands on crafts and live artists. Live music. Family friendly activities. Food trucks. Free Health Screenings. Face painting and much more.
Studio Playhouse (14 Alvin Place, Upper Montclair) will present The Stinky Cheese Man, and Other Fairly Stupid Tales on Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM. This is the final weekend. Narrator Jack tries to keep a wild group of storybook characters in line before total chaos or a song breaks out. This show is for adults and children of all ages. Tickets are $8 and are available online.
Saturday is Free Comic Book Day! Stop in to East Side Mags (7 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair) for signings with guests, a raffle, and free comics! They’ll be opening early at 9:00 AM.
Barnes & Noble at Clifton Commons (395 Route 3 East, Clifton) will host Dragons Love Tacos 2: The Sequel Storytime on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Find out what happens when the dragons who love tacos learn that there are no more tacos left anywhere in the world!
Glen Ridge Public Library (240 Ridgewood Avenue, Glen Ridge) will host a Mother’s Day Craft on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Drop in to make a craft perfect for Mom or anyone special in your life!
Starting Out Fresh Intervention Advocates (S.O.F.I.A.) will host a Children’s Superhero Writers Club Workshop on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM at The Community Services Center (11 Pine Street, Montclair). In this self-esteem building exercise, children and their adult caregiver will form a superhero team and write a story highlighting strengths, desired powers, and demonstrating how they help others. This event is free and open to children ages 5-12 and their caregivers. Preregistration is required by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Essex County Environmental Center (621-B Eagle Rock Avenue, Roseland) will host a Bird Pokemon Scavenger Hunt on Saturday from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Children ages 5 to 15 are invited for a spring-time walk to uncover the many diverse bird species of New Jersey, as well as their Pokemon counterparts. Find the images and discuss facts about the birds and the Pokemon! Advance registration required by calling 973.228.8776. Cost is $8 per child.
The WBGO Kids Jazz Concert Series will continue on Saturday at Newark Symphony Hall (1020 Broad Street, Newark) with Melissa Walker & Jazz House Kids at 1:30 PM. Celebrate the 15 years that Jazz House Kids has worked with WBGO have partnered. This event is free and recommended for children ages 7-11. Register online.
Montclair Public Library will host “7 Nights to Read” with Two of a Kind: Family Music Concert on Saturday at 2:00 PM in the Main Library (50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair). This interactive musical performance features songs about reading and books in honor of Children’s Book Week. No registration is required. The show is recommended for children ages 3 and up.
Also on Saturday, South Orange Performing Arts Center (One SOPAC Way, South Orange) will present Bright Star Touring Theatre’s Happily Ever After at 2:00 PM. Laugh out loud at these hilarious renditions of the best stories from the Grimm Brothers’ iconic works. Recommended for ages 4-10. Tickets are $15.
The Newark Museum (49 Washington Street, Newark) will host MakerSPACE on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Celebrate creativity and ingenuity with makers of all kinds including woodworkers, beekeepers, robotics engineers, 3D-printing artists, and more. Join demonstrations, participate in hands-on workshops, and hear speakers who push the limits of art, science, and technology. Tickets are $20 for adults and $8 for children ages 3-12. Children under 2 are free.
Mayo Performing Arts Center (100 South Street, Morristown) will present The Little Prince on Sunday at 1:30 PM. For ages 4 – 10, Antoine de St. Exupery’s heartwarming story will come to life with inventive puppets, live actors, and original music. A special performance for children on the autism spectrum which features modulated sound and light levels and a relaxed environment where the audience is free to talk, vocalize, and leave and re-enter will be held at 4:30. Tickets are $12-$15.
Also on Sunday, stop by Montclair Art Museum for Drop-In Studio between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The new Helen & Bill Geyer Art Studio will be stocked with a range of art materials to explore with a seasoned MAM studio instructor. This is free for members and included in Museum admission for non-members.
