Weekend Family Highlights: GLAM Festival, Storytime, Walking Tour, Creative Play and More!

Happy Mother’s Day weekend! We’ve rounded up plenty of fun activities in the area for the whole family to enjoy. Check ‘em out!

Barnes & Noble at Clifton Commons (395 Route 3 East, Clifton) will host a special Mother’s Day Storytime on Saturday at 11:00 AM. This week’s story is “How to Raise a Mom” by Jean Reagan. The book is filled with charming role-reversal humor, creativity, and love. Activities will follow.

On Saturday at 3:00 PM, Montclair Public Library (50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair) will host “Buzz Words” with children’s author Ayana Webb. Webb’s book, Buzz Words, is a speech development storybook about early-occurring sounds. As a nationally certified speech-language pathologist, she reminds us that children improve best with compassion, understanding, and love. No registration is required. All ages are welcome.

 

 

POSTPONED DUE TO RAIN. The Glenridge Avenue Arts & Music Festival (Glenridge Avenue, between Bloomfield Avenue and Forest Street, Montclair) will take place on Saturday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Enjoy music, artisan food, and family fun, and shop from over 40 vendors. The event is free and will be held rain or shine.

 

 

Succeed2Gether will host a screening of the Academy Award winning film, Queen of Katwe, on Saturday from 3:15 PM to 6:15 PM at the Community Services Center (11 Pine Street, Montclair). The movie is about a 10 year old girl from the slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda, who learns to play chess from a missionary teacher. Through this, she is able to escape her life of struggle. Enjoy pizza, popcorn, and drinks. A discussion of the movie will follow the showing. This movie is rated PG and the event is recommended for children ages 10 and up. The Newark Museum (49 Washington Street, Newark) will host Creative Play sessions on Saturday at 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. This one-hour program is designed especially for early learners ages 3-5 and includes a visit to a gallery and an activity. This month’s theme is DYI Become a Maker: Be creative while using your imagination. This week’s activity is Create a House.

 

 

Montclair History Center will host Family Fun: Architectural Walking Tour on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Learn about the architectural details in the beautiful homes located on the streets near Crane House and Historic YWCA (110 Orange Road, Montclair). Cost is $10 per family, or $5 per family if you have a family membership with Montclair History Center. Each family will receive one free herb at the Center’s herb sale.
 

 

On Sunday, the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary (324 Forest Drive South, Short Hills) will host a Mother’s Day Hike where participants can learn all about wildflowers. Follow your guide into the woods and make discoveries. Dress for the weather and be prepared for the outdoors. Hikes depart at 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM, and last about 45 minutes. The suggested donation is $5/member; $10/non-member.
 

 

Also on Sunday, stop by Montclair Art Museum for Drop-In Studio between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The new Helen & Bill Geyer Art Studio will be stocked with a range of art materials to explore with a seasoned MAM studio instructor. This is free for members and included in Museum admission for non-members.
